Karen Word
Senior Curriculum Developer
Karen is a physiologist, educator, and aspiring expert in the application of community-based solutions to systemic problems in science. She has previously managed instructor training for The Carpentries and taught biology in many contexts, from the Oregon Museum of Science and Industry to high school, community college and university settings. As a Senior Curriculum Developer at C4R, she enjoys distilling ideas, connecting diverse perspectives, and exploring delightful challenges to things we take for granted. Karen holds a BA in biology from Reed College, an MS in organismal physiology from Portland State University, and a PhD in molecular, cellular, and integrative physiology from UC Davis. Karen has a disproportionate, fluffy, and charmingly oblivious rescue dog named Luna.

Ani Govjian
Senior Curriculum Developer
Ani Govjian draws on her background as a university instructor, STEM faculty writing coach, and curriculum developer to help students build intuition about rigor practices and navigate the many choices involved in doing good science. As senior curriculum developer at C4R, she designs learning tools and resources that empower early-career scientists to think critically about experimental design and research integrity. She earned her BA in English from Loyola Marymount University, her MA in English from UC Irvine, and her PhD in n English and Comparative Literature from UNC Chapel Hill. When she’s not traveling (or planning her next adventure), you can find her in the yoga studio or curling up with her cats Beans and Frankie.

Director of Technical and Research Operations
Thomas earned his bachelor’s degree in chemical engineering from the University of Delaware and his Masters of Science in Chemical Engineering from North Carolina State University. He worked as a bench scientist in academic and industry research labs, and his professional experience spans pharmaceutical R&D, stem cell engineering, carbon capture, and material science. A lifelong learner with a systems mind, Thomas enjoys using thread or fabric to teach himself new skills like sewing.
